MXPX on our stereos, WWJD on our wrists, and purity culture whispering its sweet demands — the early 2000s was the zenith of Christian youth culture and I was Bible beating on the bandwagon.

I was convinced that if Jesus and Tarot ever met at a cosmic party, sparks would fly — and not the good kind. One’s a divine figure “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). The other, a deck of cards dripped in the occult mystique — each card representing the human experience.

Growing up I was told that Tarot was a big “no-no” in my faith journey, because, well, God said so!

He said it here:

“Do not practice divination or seek omens.” (Deuteronomy 18:9–13)

and here: “Have faith in God.” (Mark 2:22)

and lots of other places….

The belief that Tarot and Jesus don’t play well together comes from competing concerns about divination. To the religious, seeking spiritual guidance from sources other than God may take one’s faith and focus away from a direct, holy relationship with Jesus.

But what if the two didn’t clash? What if one could complement the other? I can almost hear my church friends’ imaginations shuddering at the mere suggestion… Daring to bring it up in…
